Description

The scientific activity will focus on the development of fiber-optic-based measurement systems for structural health monitoring, adopting an experimental approach complemented by the development of numerical models. Metrics to quantify damage detection effectiveness, such as Probability of Detection (POD) and Model-Assisted POD (MAPOD), will be identified to develop a figure of merit assessing the sustainability of the monitoring system for a given application. The activity will include shape sensing using multi-core fibers or multiple single-core fibers, with the aim of minimizing error accumulation arising from the integration of the Frenet–Serret formulas. The research will focus on the investigation of innovative solutions based both on Fiber Bragg Grating technologies and on distributed sensing technologies such as Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry (OFDR), phase-sensitive Optical Time-Domain Reflectometry (φ-OTDR) and Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA).
