The department is concerned with scientific and educational activities in general and applied entomology, primarily concerning the protection of plants and their derived products, both food and non-food. In particular, it focuses on systematics, morphology, physiology, phylogeny, ecology, ethology, diagnostics, epidemiology, and biodiversity of arthropods and nematodes, primarily of agricultural, forestry, urban-landscape, commodity, zootechnical, veterinary, and forensic interest; cultural heritage and archaeoentomology; apidology and bee pathology, beekeeping, and sericulture; insect, mite, and nematode breeding for various purposes; biofactory design and management; bioconversion; agricultural parasitology; general and applied zoology in agriculture and forestry; trophic interactions and biocoenosis structure; protection and enhancement of useful or threatened species; biological and integrated pest management of alien animals and plants
