Development of an Innovative and Sustainable Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) Model for Sea Bass and Gilthead Sea Bream Mariculture, Based on Smart Systems, Functional Feeds, and Marine Biodiversity Conservation
Scientific-Disciplinary Group
07/AGRI-09 - Animal Science And Technology
Description
The experimental activity aims to develop an innovative and sustainable model for sea-based farming of sea bass and gilthead sea bream, integrating smart systems, balanced feeds enriched with essential oils to enhance fish immune defenses, and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA). This approach, framed within a circular economy perspective, combines fed species (e.g., fish, shrimp) with extractive species (e.g., autotrophs, filter-feeders, detritivores), converting waste into nutrients for multiple trophic levels. The project foresees the integration of native sea urchins (Paracentrotus lividus) and sponges into the sea bass and sea bream farming system, contributing to marine biodiversity. The model will be evaluated through monitoring of zootechnical performance, fish welfare, and metabolism using advanced methodologies, such as proteomics.
