Within the broader project “Ancient Science Ancient Philosophy: the philosophical foundations ofscience in Antiquity”, the fellowships support research on the scientific status of medicine fromPlato to Galen and to late antique theology, focusing also on the role and the social and culturalperception of medicine and healing practices in Antiquity. Analyzing how philosophical debatescontributed to advancements or decline on these aspects will be at the core of the research activity.Special attention will be paid to Hellenistic and post-Hellenistic physicians, and to assessingwhether an anti-Aristotelian project of detaching the principles of medical science from those ofnatural philosophy actually existed on their part. The methodological views of physicians from theHellenistic age to Galen will be compared with philosophical and theological doctrines until lateAntiquity, but also with the scientific practice of their time
