Description
Current large language models (LLMs), despite being trained on vast amounts of text, still struggle with tasks requiring social awareness, such as understanding moral values and handling sensitive contexts. This is a critical issue given their increasing use in delicate domains. Existing approaches, based on text-only training and fine-tuning, fail to develop a true ability to “read the situation.” The SALMON project addresses this gap by integrating social awareness directly into pre-training through interactive environments with real-time feedback. By combining insights from social sciences and AI, it aims to develop safer models better aligned with human values, evaluated through new metrics.The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to the development and evaluation of these methods by conducting experiments, analyses, and human-participant studies, coordinating interdisciplinary collaborations, and supporting project management.
