No evidence of disease activity in epilepsy treatment (NEDA-EPI)
Scientific-Disciplinary Group
06/MEDS-12 - Neurology
Description
The concept of “No Evidence of Disease Activity” (NEDA), initially developed in multiple sclerosis, emphasizes the importance of comprehensive disease control beyond primary symptomatology. In epilepsy, treatment success has traditionally been defined by seizure control. However, growing evidence suggests that even well-controlled patients may develop progressive comorbidities, including cognitive decline and brain atrophy. This prospective study will longitudinally investigate epilepsy patients from diagnosis to a 2-year follow-up, adopting a multidimensional approach that integrates seizure control, high-density EEG, cognitive and psychiatric assessments, magnetic resonance imaging, and serum biomarkers of neurodegeneration/neuroinflammation. By combining these measures, we aim to capture the full spectrum of epilepsy-related dysfunctions and identify early predictors of disease progression.
