Engineered living bioelectronic interfaces (BIONIC)
Scientific-Disciplinary Group
05/BIOS-10 - Cellular And Experimental Biology
Description
The program aims to develop a new class of engineered living materials (Engineered Living Bioelectronic Interfaces), namely organic bioelectronic interfaces, directly within the tissues of living organisms. A freshwater invertebrate, the polyp Hydra vulgaris, will be used as model organism, and genetic engineering approaches will be employed to produce transgenic polyps capable of polymerizing conductive structures in epithelial or neuronal cells. Subsequently, the impact of these “living” materials on animal physiology will be assessed through behavioral, molecular, electrophysiological, and functional imaging assays. The use of functionalized nanoparticles will be considered as an alternative strategy to the genetic approach for expressing bioactive proteins in animal tissues.
