Scientific-Disciplinary Group
10/ARCH-01 - Archaeology
Description
The research programme isbased on the analysis of archaeobotanical samples from Sicily, Egypt, and Tunisia, with the aim ofinvestigating the introduction and spread of food and industrial crops and their relationships withecology, agricultural systems, and socio-cultural dynamics. The study will focus on plant macroremains(seeds/fruits, woods/charcoals) to define the relationships between local and exotic speciesand their spatial and temporal variability. Selected taxa will be analysed using geometricmorphometrics to distinguish varieties and cultivation practices (cotton, flax, Vicia faba, fruittrees). The research will be integrated with stable isotope analyses (C, N, Sr) to reconstruct growth conditions, agricultural techniques, and provenance. The integration of these data will enable acomparative assessment of production and circulation dynamics in the medieval Mediterranean;
