Data and digital infrastructures: impact on the European and Italian economy between productivity and sustainability
Scientific-Disciplinary Group
13/ECON-04 - Applied Economics
Description
The project investigates the role of intangible assets and digital infrastructures as drivers of productivity and sustainability in the EU and Italy. Using a quantitative approach with advanced econometric models and panel data from Eurostat, Orbis, OECD, PeeringDB, and Baxtel, the research estimates the impact of data centers and investments in data, software, and intellectual property on economic and environmental performance in Europe and Italy. By integrating information on location, energy consumption, interconnection, ownership, and foreign direct investments, we employ staggered Difference-in-Differences models to measure the effect of new localization of data centers. The goal is to provide robust empirical evidence on the digitalization-productivity-sustainability nexus and to deliver policy recommendations for fair and inclusive data governance.
