Development of polymer-matrix biocomposites for food packaging and environmental assessment by Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
Scientific-Disciplinary Group
09/IMAT-01 - Materials Science And Technology
Description
The research activity will focus on the development of polymer-matrix biocomposites for food packaging through the selection and optimization of biodegradable polymers, natural fillers, and active compounds with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Different manufacturing technologies will be investigated for the production of flexible, rigid, and hybrid packaging systems, evaluating their mechanical, barrier, and food preservation performances. Particular attention will be devoted to environmental sustainability through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach aimed at analyzing the impact of materials, production processes, and end-of-life scenarios, including recycling and biodegradation. LCA methodologies will support the design of innovative, sustainable, and circular-oriented biopackaging systems within the FIS3 PACMAN project (PAckaging Concepts and MAterials from Natural and Biodegradable Feedstock for Next-Generation Food Preservation Solutions).
