Description
The research program aims to investigate the applicability of latent heat storage in domestic heat pump water heaters, considering energy, economic and construction-related aspects. In the first phase, the research will review the state of the art of the technology, with particular attention to the materials most suitable for the application and their properties. Subsequently, numerical models of the storage unit and the heat pump will be developed to assess the impact of the main parameters on the system KPIs. In particular, the material’s heat transfer properties, compatibility with heat exchangers, possible heat exchangers configurations and the refrigerant used will be analyzed. The results will guide the design of a prototype. Finally, an experimental campaign will be carried out to evaluate the prototype’s performance and validate the numerical tools developed.
