Description
The research project aims to analyze the role of the model of the republican constitution of ancient Rome in the debate aver the ratification of the American Constitution of 1787. At the center of the analysis will be the comparison between Publius and Brutus, in which Rome becomes, for the Federalists, a positive paradigm of a free res pub/ica, while for the Anti-Federalists it serves as a warning against the risk of tyranny. By comparing the classica! form of mixed government with the modem constitutional framework of the United States-through textual analysis, doctrinal reconstruction, and a comparison between classical sources and the Federalist Papers by Hamilton, Madison, and Jay-the research seeks to highlight the reinterpretation carried out by the Constitution of 1787, as it brings the ancient legacy into dialogue with the doctrines of the separation of powers and the principle of representation, as well as with the innovative management of factions.
