Tsunami generation processes and signal characterization and detection in seas, lakes and fjords
Scientific-Disciplinary Group
04/GEOS-04 - Geophysics
Description
The activities will focus on two main, complementary research lines.1) Analytical-numerical modelling of the tsunami wave generation process from various source types (earthquakes, landslides, calving) in the open sea, lakes, and fjords, as well as the interaction of these waves with coastal structures (e.g., bays, fjords, harbours). The research will focus on the potential limitations of "depth-averaged" approaches in tsunami simulations and, regarding coastal interaction, on the possible excitation of normal modes and natural frequencies.2) Analysis of tide gauge signals recorded by offshore sensors and/or coastal stations. Identification and extraction of tsunami signals from background noise for source reconstruction and real-time detection. The analysis will employ advanced methodologies for non-linear and non-stationary time series, such as the "Fast Iterative Filtering (FIF)" technique, integrated with classical and well-established techniques from the literature.
