The Economic Impact of Cultural Routes: A Comparative Analysis of the Romea Strata and the Via Francigena
Scientific-Disciplinary Group
13/ECON-02 - Economic Policy
Description
This one-year project aims to estimate the economic impact of cultural routes using a quasi-experimental research design based on comparisons between treated territories and matched control areas. The methodology involves the collection of primary field data and the construction of pairs of territories that are similar in socioeconomic, demographic, and geographic characteristics, differing only in the presence of the cultural route. This territorial matching strategy enables the isolation—within an observational setting—of the causal effect attributable to the itinerary.Empirical analysis will focus on two distinct case studies: the Romea Strata (with a particular emphasis on the Friuli segment) and the Way of St. Francis (Via Francigena in the Rimini area and its province). Examining two separate contexts will enhance the comparability and external validity of the results and will allow for the assessment of heterogeneity in impacts across different cultural routes.
