Development and Validation of HD-sEMG-Based Rehabilitation Protocols for Upper-Limb Impairments
Scientific-Disciplinary Group
06/MEDF-01 - Physical Training And Sports Sciences
Description
The project aims to develop innovative upper-limb rehabilitation protocols based on theanalysis of neural motor neuron activity within the arm-shoulder complex. The study involves an initial testing phase on healthy subjects, followed by clinical validation in two cohorts: breast cancer patients with shoulder functional deficits and post-stroke patients exhibiting pathological flexor synergies. Through motor tasks involving adduction and flexion at different elevations, spinal motor neuron pool activity will be monitored via High-Density Surface Electromyography (HD-sEMG). Furthermore, the level of correlation between motor neurons within the same muscle and across different muscles will be estimated during isometric contractions. The efficacy of these protocols will be assessed by quantifying changes in neuromuscular markers, mobility, and range of motion (ROM) recorded before and after treatment sessions
