Bridging soil-plant-atmosphere dynamics with advanced EO data to address water accounting in the Mediterranean - 2026_IDR_DICA_8
Scientific-Disciplinary Group
08/CEAR-01 - Hydraulics, Hydrology, Hydraulic And Maritime Engineering
Description
The TWISTT project (who TWISTs the Tap?) will develop a novel multi-scale Earth Observation (EO) and modelling system to solve the gap of data availability, quality and incomplete coverage required in water accounting. The FEST-EWB model will be applied across different irrigation districts in Northern Italy to quantify the irrigation volumes and the impacts on the water balance fluxes. Satellite data of soil moisture and surface temperature will be analyzed and integrated into the FEST-EWB model using data assimilation techniques. The estimates will be validated through comparisons with ground soil moisture and evapotranspiration measurements, information from Irrigation Consortia, and independent satellite estimates.
