Optimization of Hermetia illucens bioconversion processes of organic by-products and agronomic assessment of larval frass
Scientific-Disciplinary Group
07/AGRI-05 - Plant Pathology And Entomology
Description
The research program, consistent with the circular economy theme of the Science PhD project, aims to enhance the bioconversion potential of the larvae of Hermetia illucens, which are capable of transforming organic by-products into high-value biomass within the framework of a circular economy. The study investigates the biological dynamics and environmental parameters (such as temperature, humidity, and the type of organic substrate) that regulate larval growth, assessing the conversion efficiency of different organic waste streams and the resulting yield of larval biomass. In parallel, the program adopts a zero-waste approach by promoting the reuse of one of the main by-products of insect rearing: larval frass. The study characterizes its chemical and microbiological composition and evaluates its effectiveness as an organic soil amendment and natural fertilizer through experimental trials on soil and crops.
