Valorization of agro-industrial by-products by Hermetia illucens bioconversion processes for sustainable protein-based bioplastic films
Scientific-Disciplinary Group
07/AGRI-05 - Plant Pathology And Entomology
Description
The research program aims to develop an integrated and sustainable process based on the rearing of Hermetia illucens as a bioconverter insect of organic side streams. Larvae will be reared on by-products deriving from different industrial chain to obtain protein-rich biomass, followed by protein extraction and characterization, optimizing yield and functional properties. The extracted proteins will be formulated into self-standing biodegradable films, whose mechanical, barrier, and biodegradation performances will be assessed. The films will also be functionalized with natural molecules to impart antimicrobial properties and will be tested on selected model plants. The project combines bioconversion, waste valorization, and the development of innovative biomaterials, targeting sustainable packaging and biodegradable agricultural mulching applications.
