Description

The ERC Consolidator Grant project MICOLL investigates the formation and circulation of commercial law institutions and terminology within the European space, with particular attention to the relations between Northern Italy and the German-speaking areas between the eleventh and seventeenth centuries. Through an interdisciplinary approach combining legal history, historical linguistics, and digital humanities, the project analyses mercantile and legal sources in order to reconstruct the migration of legal institutions, concepts, and technical-legal vocabulary. The analysis of the terms used in commercial transactions will make it possible to assess the impact of merchants’ migrations on the development of law and on social and economic history. The project envisages the creation of a “Historical Lexicon of Commercial Law: Italian, German, Latin” and the development of digital tools for the visualization of mercantile networks.
