Advanced Contact and Contactless Deformation Monitoring Approaches for Masonry Structures
Scientific-Disciplinary Group
08/CEAR-07 - Structural Analysis And Design
Description
The researcher will contribute to the FIS 2021 “SMS-SAFEST” project through experimental validation of smart construction materials, focusing on verifying the accuracy of smart bricks (strain sensing) and smart mortar (crack detection) using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) as the main reference. DIC will provide full-field, non-contact displacement and strain data for systematic comparison. The researcher will perform tests on small-scale specimens (Task 2.5), including diagonal compression on masonry walls and tests on scaled arches under vertical and lateral loads, up to ultimate conditions. DIC will capture strain fields and crack evolution, supplying a detailed validation dataset. The researcher will also support post-insertion of smart bricks (Task 3.1), using DIC to assess induced disturbances. Finally, full-scale static tests (Task 3.4) will complete the work, with DIC enabling continuous monitoring for validation of smart materials and AI-based damage detection.
