The project activities include: a) the production of an edition with text and critical apparatus, translation and commentary of the testimonia and fragments of Symmachus and Phainus; b) an in-depth study of the exegetical interests of the two scholars, their place in their respective historical and cultural periods, and an investigation into the form in which their fragments are preserved and cited; c) the framing of Symmachus and Phainus among the ancient exegetes of Aristophanes to assess their debt to previous exegesis, their original features and their contribution to subsequent exegesis; d) the evaluation of their ecdotic-exegetic contribution to the surviving Aristophanic text.
