Development of new disease biomarkers by laboratory applications as prognostic tools
Scientific-Disciplinary Group
05/BIOS-09 - Clinical Biochemistry And Clinical Molecular Biology
Description
In recent years, the introduction of new technologies and the expansion of pathophysiological knowledge have stimulated research into non-invasive biochemical methods for the diagnosis and monitoring of numerous disease conditions. On the other hand, the advent of new therapeutic approaches is highlighting the need for early intervention in the course of diseases and for predicting response to various treatments. The development of prognostic biomarkers therefore represents a new challenge for the identification and characterization of new molecules and for the analytical and clinical validation of reliable methods for their determination in biological fluids. The laboratory objective is to develop practical biochemical assays that can be easily integrated into clinical laboratories. The experimental approach relies on the use of sensitive techniques, such as chemiluminescence, immunofluorescence, immunoblotting, and microarrays, for the accurate quantification of biomarkers.
