ERC HARSH - Understanding the roots of harsh parenting
Scientific-Disciplinary Group
13/ECON-02 - Economic Policy
Description
Harsh parenting (HP), defined as corporal or emotional punishment used to discipline children, harms children physically and psychologically yet remains widespread and persistent across regions and demographic groups. Why? Existing research mainly focuses on individual and family determinants, overlooking the broader cultural, institutional, and economic contexts shaping childrearing. HARSH addresses this gap. It has four objectives: (1) uncover the ancestral cultural roots of persistent HP; (2) identify the causal impact of economic factors; (3) assess the role of institutions and policies; and (4) explain the mechanisms linking these contextual forces to HP. Focusing on Europe and sub-Saharan Africa, HARSH combines new disaggregated data with spatial and causal methods to generate interdisciplinary evidence and inform effective policies against this hidden public health problem.
