Description

The project will focus on the study of radio halos in galaxy clusters using multifrequency observations. As a first step, the candidate will combine LOFAR 144 MHz data and uGMRT band 4 data of a sub-sample of galaxy clusters with a radio halo detected in the second data release of the LOFAR Two Meter Sky Survey (LoTSS). As a second step, the candidate will analyse LOFAR 144 MHz observations of all the clusters in the third data release of LoTSS, combined with LOFAR 50 MHz observations. The goal of the project is to perform the first systematic and unbiased study of the spectral properties of radio halos. Current models predict a high fraction of radio halos with very steep spectra, especially in low mass clusters and in minor mergers. The candidate will measure the spectrum of all radio halos and derive its distribution, in connection to the clusters' mass and dynamics, in order to perform a crucial test for models.
