Beyond Yes and No: Forms and Functions of Polarity-Oriented Responses in Spoken Italian
Scientific-Disciplinary Group
10/GLOT-01 - Theories And History Of Languages
Description
The project investigates polarity-oriented responses in spoken Italian, focusing on short or semi-autonomous replies that manage confirmation, rejection, agreement, disagreement and stance in interaction. The study will analyse forms such as "certo, ovvio, va bene, ci sta, macché, eccome, figurati, mica tanto, assolutamente" in the KIParla corpus. The research combines a bottom-up exploration of conversational data with a top-down annotation of a controlled sample, considering form, polarity, sequential context and semantic-pragmatic dimensions such as epistemicity, evaluation, mirativity and counterexpectation. A selected subset of forms will also be examined diachronically to reconstruct processes of conventionalisation and pragmaticalisation. Expected outputs include an annotation grid, an annotated dataset, a functional taxonomy and scientific publications.
