Defenses and Critiques of the Occult Sciences in Greek and Syriac Sources on Manichaeism
Scientific-Disciplinary Group
11/PHIL-02 - Logic, History And Philosophy Of Science And Technology
Description
In the framework of the ERC project MOSAIC, the current position will focus on the study of the arguments—ontological, epistemological, moral, religious, and otherwise—developed both in support of and against the occult sciences in the Greek and Syriac traditions. Particular attention will be devoted to Manichaean sources, since a substantial corpus of Greek and Syriac Christian texts, dating from the Late Roman Empire to the late Middle Ages, attributes a wide variety of occult practices to the Manichaeans.
