Advanced Numerical Modeling of Corona Discharges for Atmospheric Ionic Propulsion
Scientific-Disciplinary Group
09/IIET-01 - Electrical Engineering
Description
The research activity is part of the European project IPROP (Ionic PROPulsion in Atmosphere) and focuses on the development of advanced numerical models for corona discharges and electrohydrodynamic (EHD) propulsion. An existing self-consistent drift–diffusion plasma model will be extended by introducing photoionization models, advanced reaction kinetics and improved transport formulations. The model will be adapted to low-pressure and low-temperature conditions representative of altitudes up to 20,000 m and coupled with a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solver through one-way and two-way coupling strategies. Finally, the numerical results will be validated against experimental data obtained from multi-stage corona thrusters developed within the IPROP project.
