Development of an advanced numerical model of a vanadium redox flow battery for energy simulation and optimization - 2026_IDR_DENG_22

The activity aims to develop a model of a Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) energy storage system for the simulation, analysis, and optimization of its operation within complex energy systems. The model will be used to support predictive energy resource management and the integration of renewable energy sources. The activity will be carried out within the framework of the ZEPHYRUS project (Zero Emissions PatHwaY through a holistic appRoach to climate change mitigation, Urban regeneration and Sustainable development, CUP: B49H26000290007).The model will reproduce the main electrochemical, fluid dynamic, and thermal phenomena governing the system, including the effects of mass transport, vanadium crossover, and shunt currents, which are responsible for capacity degradation and efficiency losses, respectively. It will be calibrated and validated using experimental data obtained from the MUSA project and designed to ensure computational times compatible with long-term analysis.
