Description

The research program aims to promote the conservation and sustainable management of old-growth forests in Basilicata through the large-scale identification of potentially old-growth stands, their validation by means of structural and dendroecological analyses, and the subsequent delineation of their boundaries to support strategic planning and enhance regional ecological resilience. The program also includes the phenotypic characterization of European crop wild relatives (Malus, Pyrus, Prunus) to identify hotspots of genetic diversity relevant for varietal improvement under climate change within the “One Health” framework. The reaserch program further integrates teaching activities within courses related to the research topics, including field-based training and the involvement of undergraduate and PhD students, as well as knowledge transfer initiatives targeting forest managers and regional stakeholders.
