Exploring the formation of the first stars and black holes in the first galaxies through high resolution hydrodynamical simulations
Scientific-Disciplinary Group
02/PHYS-05 - Astrophysics And Cosmology, Earth- Space- And Climate Physics
Description
The research activity will focus on characterizing the environments in which the first stars and the first high-redshift black holes form, exploring their properties as a function of gas density and metallicity, the level of turbulence, and UV radiation. Ultra-high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations will be employed, capable of consistently following the fragmentation of molecular clouds, the gas accretion phase onto protostars, the dynamical interactions among protostars, and radiative feedback. The ultimate goal is to characterize the efficiency of star formation and feedback in the earliest star-forming environments, the resulting stellar mass function, and consequently the distribution and properties of the black holes that form at the end of stellar evolution.
