Interactions between bottom trawling, plastic marine litter, and benthic invertebrates
Scientific-Disciplinary Group
05/BIOS-05 - Ecology
Description
The project aims to investigate the interactions between bottom trawling, benthic macroinvertebrates (by-catch), and the distribution of plastic marine litter. Research activities include the characterization of plastic marine litter intercepted during fishing operations and the study of its associations with marine invertebrates that use these materials as artificial settlement substrates, including sponges, cnidarians, echinoderms, and bivalves. The project also involves the recovery of these organisms, their husbandry and maintenance in controlled laboratory systems for their subsequent use for restoration purposes. The project therefore requires proven cross-disciplinary expertise in the husbandry and management of marine invertebrates in controlled environments, as well as in the study of the dynamics of plastic marine litter in benthic ecosystems and its interactions with marine organisms.
