Development and validation of a multiscale mathematical model for the simulation of wildland fire front propagation
Scientific-Disciplinary Group
01/MATH-04 - Mathematical Physics
Description
The research program aims at developing a multiscale mathematical model and a numerical simulator to describe and predict the propagation of wildfire fronts in natural environments. The theoretical framework is based on reaction–diffusion–transport partial differential equations, capable of representing combustion, heat diffusion, wind-driven convective transport, and fuel consumption. The main variables will be temperature and biomass density. The numerical discretization of the model will be carried out using finite difference and/or finite element methods, appropriately adapted to account for spatial heterogeneities, non-uniform wind fields, variable moisture content, and complex topography. The simulator will also enable computations on unstructured meshes, as well as sensitivity analyses and parametric uncertainty quantification.
