2026-IpdDip-02-DBBS - Advanced Virtual brAin models to predicT the effects of deep brAin stimulation on neuRal activity (AVATAR)
Scientific-Disciplinary Group
05/BIOS-06 - Physiology
Description
This research program (code FIS-2024-00837) focuses onmultiscale brain modeling for applications in Deep BrainStimulation (DBS) in patients with Parkinson’s disease. Theactivity aims to develop next-generation computationalframeworks capable of reproducing and predicting theneural effects of DBS protocols with high biological realism. The work involves modeling neuronal activity using spikingneural networks and, subsequently, mean-field models ofthe main brain regions involved in DBS, with particularattention to the characterization of stimulation-induceddynamics. The project also includes the reconstruction ofbrain microstructure using advanced magnetic resonanceimaging techniques and structural image processingpipelines. These elements will support realistic subjectspecificDBS simulations and lay the groundwork forclinically relevant applications.
