Description

The project entails the first systematic edition of a corpus of 50 sermons on Saint Francis of Assisi written between his canonisation (1228) and Nicholas III's Exiit qui seminat (1279). It focuses on a period characterised by the progressive formalisation, homiletic and hagiographic, of the figure of Francis, both within and outside the Order. The study of these sermons, not exclusively Franciscan, offers a new reading of the figure of Saint Francis as seen also by members of the Church outside the Order. Identifying the texts requires command of relevant up-to-date repertories and the principal specialised scholarship. The edition Will include both unedited sermons and texts known through outdated editions or needing revision on broader manuscript traditions. The ultimate aim of the project is to make a homogeneous corpus accessible and to provide a reliable textual basis for the study of the construction and transmission of the figure of Francis in thirteenth-century preaching.
