DISG (IPD 03-2026) Active mechanics in bio-Inspired enginereed thin structures
Scientific-Disciplinary Group
08/CEAR-06 - Mechanics Of Solids And Structures
Description
The aim of the research is the study of the possibility to create soft actuators of controllable shape by using bio-inspired smart discs whose activity is driven by molecular motors and whose change of shape is also driven by elastic instabilities. Those kind of materials are usually called "active gels" and the theoretical analysis, that is the core of the research project, is based on continuum models of thin discs, within the context of nonlinear mechanics and material remodelling. The main objective is exploring the interplay between gel activity and geometry-driven elastic instabilities on the shape deformation of the active discs and design experimental tests, which can be carried on in a Lab.
