Design, modelling and experimental characterization of ultra-thin optical filters for high-energy space missions
The researcher's work program will focus on the development of optical components for scientific instrumentation aboard high-energy space missions, particularly ultra-thin optical filters, including innovative technologies such as those based on carbon nanotubes with metal coatings. The work will be structured on several fronts: 1) design guided by the scientific and environmental performance requirements of the mission, such as the European Space Agency's (ESA) NewAthena; 2) numerical modelling to optimize design parameters; 3) support to the fabrication of representative models; 4) experimental characterization and data analysis. The researcher, also acting as principal investigator, will conduct high-energy resolution transmission spectroscopy campaigns at synchrotron beamlines to verify in-band and out-of-band response and to quantitatively characterize the chemical composition of the materials under study.
