2026-IpdDip-04-dbb - Understanding microbiota–symbiont–host interactions for advanced vector control strategies

The successful candidate will undertake research activities as part of the COMPASS project, funded by the Italian Science Fund (FIS3). The project seeks to elucidate how interactions among Wolbachia, the resident microbiota,and the mosquito host influence arbovirus transmission by shaping vector competence, thereby laying the foundation for the development of innovative and sustainable symbiont-based vector control strategies.

Selection process

The selection of candidates is carried out on the basis of qualifications and interview, supplemented by a test of knowledge of the foreign language (see Art. 1 par. 1 Call for applications). The public call with detailed attendance and selection rules (Art 4 and 6) can be found at: https://pica.cineca.it/unipv/tipologia/idrThe selections are open to candidates, Italian or foreigner, in possession, on the date of the deadline for submitting applications for the admission to the selection, of a research doctorate (PhD) or equivalent qualification obtained abroad, or, for the sectors concerned, a medical specialization qualification. The educational qualification has to concern the research theme. Further specific assessable qualifications (see Art. 1 par. 1 Call for applications):- Demonstrated experience in the study ofbacterial microbiota in insect–microorganismsystems.- Demonstrated experience in investigating theinteractions between the mosquito immune systemand arboviral infections.- In-depth knowledge of mosquito biology,including colony establishment and maintenance,insect rearing, and in vivo experimental work.- Strong expertise in molecular biology techniques,including molecular cloning, PCR, and qPCR.- Solid background in cell biology, with hands-onexperience in cell culture and cell-based functionalassays.- Experience in supervising undergraduate,master's, and/or PhD students.- Ability to work independently and to makeintellectual contributions to experimental designand the scientific development of researchprojects.- Excellent written and spoken English.
