Development of cameras for Cherenkov Telescopes for the CTAO-South research infrastructure and for muon tomography systems for volcano monitoring
The areas on which this project’s activities will focus are: Muonographic imaging of active volcanoes using the air-Cherenkov technique. The idea is to use ASTRI/SST wide-field air-Cherenkov telescopes. The study will take place in Sicily (observing Mount Etna) and in Tenerife (to observe the Teide volcano). The project also involves the development of new optoelectronic technologies based on silicon sensors for single-photon counting (SPC), inspired by the advanced solutions used in Cherenkov detectors. These sensors will be coupled with new-generation scintillator crystals to improve performance in terms of efficiency, time resolution and sensitivity. Finally, innovative multi-channel LIDAR atmospheric monitoring techniques based on Raman spectroscopy will be developed for atmospheric monitoring at various altitudes, with a view to studying environmental pollution and changes in the structure of the atmosphere.
