Research contract in Coptic Studies as part of the MASLAB project:

MASLAB investigates the transformations in the exercise of episcopal power within Christian communities in the Near East (7th–10th centuries) during the transition from Byzantine and Sasanian rule to Islamic rule. Drawing on a diverse, multilingual corpus of sources, the project analyzes how episcopal authority, relational networks, and the resources available to bishops adapted, reorganized, and redefined themselves within the new political and religious structures of the Islamic Empire.The project combines qualitative and quantitative methods to map bishops and dioceses of the Islamic period while comparing the experiences of various Eastern Christian traditions.The successful candidate will:- Conduct an individual research project on topics relevant to the project's objectives, with a particular focus on the Coptic Church.- Collect and analyze information from Coptic and Greek sources to compile a database and conduct a prosopographical study.
