Development and application of a computational multi-scale model to study the elasto-plastic behavior of metal surfaces under wear
The project aims to investigate the elastoplastic response of metallic surfaces subjected to contact and abrasion using a multiscale computational approach. A method developed within the research group will be employed, combining atomistic simulations with discrete dislocation dynamics. This approach makes it possible to describe both dislocation nucleation at the atomic scale and the subsequent evolution of dislocations over larger spatial and temporal scales. The activity will include the application and extension of the method to different loading conditions, contact geometries, and microstructural features. The onset of plasticity, the formation and propagation of dislocation structures, and their influence on the mechanical response will be analysed, together with the effects of solid lubricants such as graphene and molybdenum disulfide
