Gothic Modernity in Romance Europe

The research will concern the circulation of the forms of the Gothic and of its related texts (magazines,translations, adaptations) in Romance Europe during the long nineteenth century (1789-1914). The widerframework of the project in which the research will take place concerns the ways in which French, Spanish,and Italian (and to a lesser extent Romanian and Portuguese) literary cultures have imported the modelsof the Gothic adapting them to their specific socio-cultural contexts and to the traumas of their specificnational histories. Particular attention will be dedicated to the negotiation of identity taking place in theadaptation of a literary model perceived as inherently foreign, and the ways in which these forms aremetabolized and adapted within a different cultural frame. The research carried on by this specific positionwill concern mostly, but not exclusively, the Italian case.
